To Infinity and Beyond
In June of 2016, I received a letter from my Aunt Carol that read,
“For Sarah-your mind and body are God’s gift to you! Make the most of
them. Learn something new every day. Always be reading a book other
than the ones you have to! Do something challenging. Discuss an idea
with someone who may know more than you. Know I love you!”
I’m pretty sure my 12 year old self read those words and threw her card in some random drawer. It was the summer after 6th grade. I was worried about blasting my speaker and eating boiled peanuts in the inflatable kiddie pool that I saved up to buy from the Dollar General, definitely not reading books or doing anything challenging. I mean, hello?
I can proudly say now at 15 years old, after maturing a little bit over the years, that I am beyond thankful my Aunt Carol hovered over me and drove me a little crazy at times. I could sit here and ramble off her resume and all of the incredible positions she’s held or people she’s met, but that’s not what I admire most about her.
My Aunt Carol has always had nothing but high expectations for me, just like God does. I’ve used this verse before but I’m using it again because sometimes we, including myself, live like we don’t believe it.
1 Corinthians 2:9 says, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.”
I see people settle all of the time like they have nothing worth living for. I’m here to remind you or maybe tell you for the first time that you were made for so much more than what you’re doing with your life today. If you have a heart for Jesus you’ve got to have a heart for the people He loves. You’ve got to get involved in His plan for your plan to actually mean something. Now this might sound like a washed up resolution but I have witnessed and seen prayer do breathtaking things my friends, all it takes is for you to let go of whatever is holding you down and trust God with it. My Aunt Carol has shared with us today a 5 finger prayer strategy she learned that’s quite well rounded and will get you started on the right foundation, here it goes.
Thumb: pray for those closest to you (family)
Pointer Finger: pray for those that point you in the right direction (teachers, doctors, priests)
Index Finger: *tallest finger* pray for those that lead us (Government) ask for guidance and wisdom
Ring Finger: *weakest finger* pray for those that are weak, in trouble or in pain
Pinkie: pray for yourself and your own needs
I also recommend going back and reading that note my Aunt Carol wrote to me and replacing my name with yours. Each and every one of you reading this is just as capable of doing great things as I am.
